Our latest BlueSkyFriday Favourite celebrates Lucy Kent, a North Wiltshire-based artist whose vibrant landscapes capture shifting light and colour with energy and depth. Working in oil both outdoors and in the studio, her paintings transform everyday scenery into immersive, evocative works. Lucy also shares her passion through commissions, limited edition prints, and art consultancy, helping others bring meaningful pieces into their homes.
Favourite Podcast and Music
I love to listen to music and podcasts when I’m painting. With music I flit between folky stuff including Johnny Flynn, Ocie Elliott and Nick Mulvey. And then some higher tempo things (especially if I’m on a deadline and it helps me paint faster!) like Maribou State - an absolute favourite band who I saw at Glastonbury last year. If I’m doing a more relaxing paint or a commission and I can actually focus on listening more - I’ll stick on a podcast. Favourites being Fearne Cotton's Happy Place and Ill-Advised from the brilliant Bill Nighy,
Favourite Travel Destination
Almost too many to name! I travel to paint as I’m a plein air painter. This is so important for my own personal practise, and I get so much out of visiting new countries. The air, the sky, the colours are all so different and unique and I simply can’t get the same feeling from photographs. It’s also integral to my practise to soak up new cultures, smells, people - the soul of a place - and to fully immerse myself in it - as I’m much more about capturing the atmosphere and feeling of a place rather than an exact photo realist representation. I have painted in Madagascar, Sri Lanka, Kenya, and California to name a few. And I am travelling to India with my paints this February which I’m so excited about.
Favourite Charity
I am honoured to be an Ambassador for A Space Between. Founded by my friends Emily and Tianna, who set up this wonderful charity from a place of lived experience, through their own struggles with mental health, chronic disease and cancer - together they built programmes to inspire a simple creative pause within hospital settings and into the wider community too. These programmes aim to break down generational barriers, patient-carer barriers and social confines through collective art spaces open to all. I very much see art as a way of healing and connecting - so their incredible work is very much in line with my own feelings on art and how it can help.
